糸満大綱引き2025 -はじめに

本文

昨年の夏の終わり頃だっただろうか。
ひょんなことから、糸満大綱引き実行委員会の副委員長、上原義隆さんを紹介していただく機会があった。
当時、私はあちこちで飲み歩きながら、 「文化や伝統を撮影したい」 そんな話をよくしていた。
その言葉を覚えていてくれた方がいて、 「紹介するよ」と声をかけてくださった。
思ってもいなかった、 しかし私にとってはとてもありがたい機会だった。
当時の私は会社で働いており、秋は繁忙期。 体力的にも、この撮影が簡単ではないことは想像できた。
それでも私は迷わなかった。
どうしても撮りたかったからだ。
だから私は、 「ぜひご紹介ください」 そうお願いした。

旧暦十五夜。 満月の日に行われる糸満大綱引き。
その本番は2025年10月6日だった。
撮影は、その前段階から始まった。
9月21日。 綱引きの舞台となる糸満市糸満の白銀堂の掃除と、綱に使う藁の準備。
そこから、 鍛冶（かぬち）棒の引き上げ、 小綱づくり（それらを寄せ集めて大綱が作られる）。
そして当日の朝からの大綱づくり、 夜の片付けまでを撮影させてもらった。

実行委員の皆さまには、本当にお世話になった。
おかげで私は、 自分がずっと撮りたいと思っていた 文化や伝統の姿を、糸満の地で撮影させていただくことができた。
紹介してくださった方にも、 そして受け入れてくださった糸満の皆さまにも、 心から感謝している。
そして改めて、 この糸満という土地に移住したことで、 こうして受け継がれてきた文化を撮影させていただけたことに 深い感謝を感じている。

しかし、本番の撮影が終わった後、 私はすぐに作品制作に取り掛かることができなかった。
当時は仕事の繁忙期でもあり、 さらにその後、体調を崩してしまった。
そのため作品制作は後回しになり、 気がつけば半年近くが過ぎ、今は三月になっている。
大切な文化を撮影させていただいたにもかかわらず、 作品として形にするまで、長い時間がかかってしまった。
この場を借りて、 まずお詫びを申し上げたい。

ここから、 私が感じた糸満大綱引きという文化、 そこに宿る魂を、
Soul Journeyとして綴っていこうと思う。

Itoman Otsunahiki 2025 — Introduction

It must have been toward the end of last summer.

By chance, I was given the opportunity to be introduced to Yoshitaka Uehara, the vice chairman of the Itoman Otsunahiki Executive Committee.

At that time, I was often out drinking here and there, telling people that I wanted to photograph culture and tradition.

Someone remembered those words and said,
“I can introduce you.”

It was not something I had expected,
but it was a very meaningful opportunity for me.

At the time, I was still working at a company, and autumn was the busiest season.

I could easily imagine that photographing this event would not be simple, physically or otherwise.

But I didn’t hesitate.

I wanted to photograph it.

So I replied,
“Please, I would be grateful for the introduction.”

The Itoman Otsunahiki is held on the night of the full moon during the lunar Mid-Autumn Festival.

In 2025, the main event took place on October 6.

My photography began before that day.

On September 21, preparations started with cleaning the grounds of Shirogindō, the sacred site in Itoman where the tug-of-war takes place, and preparing the straw used to make the ropes.

From there, I photographed the lifting of the Kanuchi-bō (the wooden pole used to bind the ropes), the making of the small ropes that would later be combined into the massive rope, the construction of the giant rope on the morning of the festival, and even the cleanup late at night after the event.

I am deeply grateful to everyone on the executive committee.

Because of their generosity, I was able to photograph the culture and tradition I had long hoped to document, here in Itoman.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the person who introduced me, and to the people of Itoman who welcomed me.

Having moved to this place, and being able to photograph a culture that has been passed down here for generations, is something I feel profoundly thankful for.

However, after the festival itself was over, I was not able to begin creating the work immediately.

At that time my job was in its busiest period, and soon after that I became unwell.

As a result, the production of the work was postponed.

Before I realized it, nearly half a year had passed, and now it is already March.

Despite having been given the opportunity to photograph such an important cultural event, it has taken me a long time to shape it into a finished body of work.

I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere apology.

From here, I will begin to write about the Itoman Otsunahiki as I experienced it —
the culture itself, and the spirit that lives within it —
as part of Soul Journey.
